What a cute game! It is inspired by this popular youtube video of a baby monkey literally riding backwards on a pig.
How you play: It’s a 2-hands game, which means that you need to use 2 hands to play it (one hand on each side of the phone). One controls the pig while the other controls the monkey to jump. They will always be running and you will need to jump at the same time or different times to avoid potholes and obstacles. It’s a very addictive game! When I first got it, I played it all the time for about 3 days straight. Well worth the $0.99. Not to mention that it also has a very catchy (and cute) theme song.
The Good
1. Cute and great graphics.
2. Catchy theme song.
3. Fun and addictive.
The Bad
Only fun for about 3 days. It is arcade-style and doesn’t have a storyline or anything like that, therefore it becomes repetitive after a while.
Most of you know Groupon, but do you know about Living Social? It is a daily discount/ deals site just like Groupon, but a little different. It also just got a facelift in terms of its user interface.
The Good
1. It has deals.
2. It divides the deals into 2 categories, daily deals and escapes (holidays, just like Jetsetter on Gilt).
3. If you recommend the deal you bought to 3 other friends and they bought the same deal, you get your deal for free.
The Bad
1. Unlike Groupon, it is not apparent what the value of the deal is, until you read the fine text descriptions.
2. It usually only has 1 deal per location – Groupon usually has more than 1 deal per location.
Confession: A Roman Catholic App by Little i Apps, LLC is the hottest new talk-of-the-web app. It is designed for users to “confess” their sins by typing them into the app, and then tracks them by saving them. Users can also check their sins off a pre-listed menu. Multiple users can utilize the app by creating an ID and password.
“The app received an imprimatur from Bishop… It is the first known imprimatur to be given for an iPhone/iPad app.” – App page.
The Good
1. It lets you confess without really going to confess in church. However…(see “The Bad #1″).
2. It is quite fun?
The Bad
1. “It does not and can not take the place of confessing before a validly ordained Roman Catholic priest in a Confessional, in person, either face to face, or behind the screen.” – App page.
The Overall
2/10
A fun novelty app, but not worth $1.99 for me. Also, does anyone else find the app icon inappropriate?
CineXPlayer is one of the video players for iPad. If you find yourself craving movies to watch on long flights, or flights in general, then this app is definitely for you. $2.99.
The Good
1. Plays all kinds of formats – AVI, Xvid, etc with subtitle support
2. Auto resume function
3. Cool looking interface
4. Easy and very fast transfer of movies to the app.
The Bad
Some users say it does not support AC3 format – I have not test this out myself.
The Overall Score
10/10 Perfect!
Awesome app, definitely worth the $2.99. Buy it here.
It is an iPad news app with original content written and designed for it fresh everyday. It covers anything from interesting news to gossip and sports. It’s now available for free for 2 weeks as a promotional. After this promotion period you can subscribe to it for 99c per week or $39.99 per year.
The Good
1. Original Content.
2. Interactivity – Lots of little bubbles and animations all over the articles. They are quite engaging and the graphics, layout, etc are pretty.
3. It’s on the iPad – Good to use when you’re bored on the sofa, just browsing… and perhaps when traveling.
The Very Bad
It’s super laggy – there have been lots of times where a page takes 1-3 seconds to load, and an animation takes a second to load. This is a killer for me.
The Overall Score
5/10
Great content, pretty graphics and fun interactivity. But if lag issues are not solved, I would not use it.
If you are a patient person, try previewing it for free yourself for 2 weeks. Here is the The Daily’s website and its App Store page.
Cover Orange is a physics-based game. There are cute oranges on the screen and you drop different things on them to cover them from the rain.
The aim is to completely protect the orange(s) from the rain.
The Good
1. Require good thinking
Each level is different and requires you to think your way to protect the oranges. The items to be dropped are of different shapes and sizes so that adds to the challenge!
Cute oranges in need of protection from the rain
2. Cute HD graphics
The graphics are really cute and bright.
The Bad
1. Cannot skip raincloud animation
For each level, the raincloud passes by slowly as it rains down the screen. It can be rather slow and repetitive, and you can’t skip it.
Raincloud passing by
The Overall Score
7/10
Awesome game that actually requires some intelligence to play. Graphics are excellent.
Wispin is an arcade-style game. Currently free thanks to FreeAppADay.com.
But is it worth downloading?
Very Short Summary
Tilt your screen to control your character. You must match your character’s color to the enemy’s in order to kill it. To change color, touch the corresponding color on the color wheel. Simply put it is an arcade-style game where you tilt your screen to move and kill enemies.
Match the enemy's color to kill it
The Good
1. Good tilt control
You can calibrate the tilt control. It is accurate.
2. Cute HD graphics
The graphics are very sharp, retina quality and the characters are also rather cute. Overall, it is very pleasing to see.
3. Fun, lots of little extra items You can do combos to get a speed boost and also collect special items such as arrows or bombs to kill the enemy in fun different ways.
Arrow weapon
The Bad
1. A little boring after a while
Not that it is a boring game, just that I personally prefer games that require a little bit more thinking instead of continuous action.
It is definitely not a totally mindless game, just your typical arcade game.
The Overall Score
7/10
Great arcade-style game with cute HD graphics for free. Definitely worth downloading!
If you’re interested, here is the game’s website and the game’s iTunes page.
As of today, Ping Pong by miniclip.com is #1 on the iPhone app store. If you’re like me, by now you’d have about 20 free apps on your phone that you haven’t opened, making your iPhone screen very cluttered.
Let’s see if it’s worth downloading!
Very Short Summary
You tilt your screen to control your Ping Pong Paddle and bounce the ball. If you fail to catch the ball as it falls, you lose the game.
It is a free with ads. You have the option to purchase the ad-free version.
Ping Pong game
The Good
1. Good tilt control
Tilt control is accurate and easy to use.
2. Clever game system
The system is clever, as in the ball bounces kind of randomly, so if you try to hack the game by keeping your screen still 100% you cannot win.
3. One more dimension
Sometimes, objects will pop up on your screen and you have to press on them to get extra points. This makes the game more challenging.
Objects pop up – You have to touch them
The Bad
1. Mindless You tilt the screen to catch the ball each time. Not much intelligence required here.
The Overall Score
4/10
It is a mindless game. May be good to play for boring car rides. If you like this type of game, then download it.
Family Feud is the top 19 game in the iPhone App store as of 30th January, 2011. I love trivia and seeing that it’s popular, I gave it a try.
Very Short Summary
You create a character and play against the AI, answering trivia questions. The higher-ranked (depends on the game) your answer is, the more chance of you winning.
The Good
1. Fun questions
It turned out to be quite a nice game! Questions are general, such as “What kind of cheese has a funny name,” or “other than rain, name a reason why a person might close the top of their convertible.” Since pretty much everyone can relate to them, they are fun to answer.
2. Wardrobe System
The game also has a wardrobe system where after each “episode” you won, you get extra clothes added to your “wardrobe.” Your character can then pick from the available clothes to wear for the next episode(s). This would perhaps appeal more to female players.
3. Decently Long
With 12 episodes and each one playable for 10 minutes, it is decently long for a 99c app.
The Bad
1. Bad Pre-set Answers
Some of the expected answers are off or sometimes downright wrong. For example, for the question “Name a letter that is uncommonly used,” the letter “y” is actually on the list! Really, you lovely Family Feud?
2. Same animation/ video playing for each episode that you can’t skip
You must have patience to wait for the animation(s) to play in between each question/ answer session, for every episode.
The Overall Score
7/10
It is worth buying for 99c, but not for more. Also, if you are easily frustrated by answers that don’t make sense, then don’t buy it!
